about

The album, Sleep Tonight, was written in Italy two summers ago, and for the past two years the project has developed and grown into something much more than my initial plan of recording a relatively quick second acoustic solo album. However, I am very happy with how the past few years of life have shaped the album, the amazing musicians and friends who agreed to take the journey with me, and the dedication and resourcefulness of everyone involved. We did not just simply record an album, well ... yes we did record an album, but we also built a studio, researched the right equipment, worked out how to use that equipment, and kept going regardless of any failures, frustrations, mistakes, retakes, and sleeplessness. Throughout it all, I mostly believed we could get it finished and for any doubt I had it was repressed by the power of peoples positivity and believe in the project.

The initial concept two years ago was to create an album of songs, simple in melody, simple in production, and contain a 'real feel' to them. It feels good to be able to say that we stuck to that statement, though temped to cut corners many times in the beginning we were focused not to let obstacles force us down a path we did not want to go. After time this concept was engraved in our minds and it got easier to accept that we needed to rerecord something because it didn't sound right, or retake a section so we did not have to edit it together. Frustrating but we believe that the outcome exceeds our initial expectations, aiming for the best we can do and having confidence we can do it.

My last album was recorded mainly by myself in my very small studio/kitchen/living room, using mostly synth instruments, and production to layer songs. This process worked at the time and it is a great way of getting ideas down but I fully reversed my method for this album. Moving to a new recording space and having the help of another engineer we were able to step up our recording quality from the source, using all real instruments, relying on the song writing itself to paint the picture rather than getting carried away with a lot of production. Of course this method is much more involved and real instruments take up much more room than computer based instruments, just come see the house! But again I was fortunate to have friends and even people I did not know to offer help and contributions to the project. A few things we begged, borrowed, stole?? not really, were; Piano, Hammond Organ, materials for staging and sound proofing, sound equipment and many many home baked goodies :) Most importantly though was the time that people committed to this recording, as we all get older time becomes more precious and I am grateful that everyone, including their families, were willing to give up their time to make this album what it is.

The above was taken from the first blog entry on Sunday, 25 May 2014, while recording the album.
